Hi, love this tutorial, looks much easier than I was picturing! However, I do have a ball tin that's in 2 spheres but is 8.5 inches in diameter. The large cutters here say they are designed for a 6inch cake, does that mean they won't work on the size tins I have?

Oh my goodness! Great project. I'm in no way a football fan, but after watching the videos, i have just realized there are so many other things to make from creating a sphere cake such as the one you have demonstrated. Cheers!

glad you like it thank you ! on the size question, yes i'm afraid these cutters would be too small for a larger football.... but if you speak to the pretty witty team i'm sure they'll order you a larger size xx

We've been told what template sizes we need in order to make a 6 inch football cake. Can we please be told what size templates are needed for carving bigger and smaller sized cakes? It would be great to have more flexibility without having to buy loads of hemisphere/ ball tins.

Oh! Also, I was wondering what thickness each layer of cake should be? Is it right to try to aim for an overall height of 6 inches, so that it matches the 6 inch width?

And cutter sizes to accompany the above comment would be great too! I have no idea what cutter size I need for a 8.5 diameter cake!

hello there, the principle is the same whatever size you want to go for....it just depend on the size of cake you start for the centre .... as everything else works from this one. e.g.: start with a 6" and go 1" down and the 3" remains the same as its used to stop you taking too much cake off the top and bottom. so if you started with an 8" then the next template would be a 7" . As you say though you need to make sure your cake will be high enough and this may mean more layers . my sponges are only ever 1.25" high if your cake needs to be higher, add your height in the middle ( by adding 2 x 6" sponges and leaving these un-carved) don't forget though the football cutters for this cake only suit the 6" ..... although i appreciate you may want the round shape for something other than a football x

Hello there, yes fruit cake is fine( I would bake this in a sphere tin though as fruit cake doesn't carve that easily. Then treat as a normal fruit cake and cover with a layer of marzipan before icing it. Xx

Hi, can you tell how I would fix this to top tier of a three tier cake, would I have to dowel it or place on card or something like that, I will be grateful for any advice... Thanks

hello there, yes you can use this as a top tier of a wedding cake, but you need to treat it in the same way as any other tier, so yes it needs dowel and supports in the cake underneath, you may also want to consider cake frame to secure it place ( more tutorials on this coming soon)
